Hawaii was the 50th state to join the Union on August 21, 1959. Located in the Northern Hemisphere of the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii consists of a chain of 132 islands. The chain extends for 1,523 miles and the eight main islands are at the southeastern end of the chain. These islands cover an area approximately 6,471 square miles and have a population of over 1,100,000.

In 1818 coffee was introduced to Hawaii from Brazil by the missionary, Samuel Ruffles. In 1829, more came from Guatemala.

All of the coffee we receive today from the islands is produced in the Northern and Southern Kona districts of the largest island, Hawaii. There are approximately 650 small farms on 2,500 acres of land in the Kona districts. They produce between 16,000 – 24,000 bags biennially, with the harvest beginning in September and ending in March.

The growing conditions on the west coast sides of the Mauna Loa, Hualalai, and Mauna Kea volcanoes are ideal. The elevation ranges between 800 – 2,400 feet. Volcanic soil is very fertile and rich; and the climate is steady and mild. An afternoon cloud cover, in addition to mountain shadows, produce just the right amount of shading. All of these things create perfect conditions for producing a fine Arabica coffee bean.

Coffee cultivation is in competition with other agricultural products such as sugar cane, pineapple, bananas and macadamia nuts. Cattle ranching and the expansion of urban areas also compete for the land. However, Hawaii still produces one of the world’s finest Arabica beans. Hawaiian Kona Estate Coffee is an exceptional coffee in terms of appearance, size, classification, density and luster. It is a superbly aromatic, smooth, medium bodied coffee, with a distinctive, wine-like flavor. Treat yourself to a cup of 100% Hawaiian Kona or even a Kona Blend, and see what our own country has to offer in terms of one of the world’s finest.
